Outlaw Kart Bearings: Sizes, 206 vs 207, and When to Replace Them

Bearings are the cheapest parts on your kart and the ones most likely to cost you a race. Nobody walks into the shop asking for bearings. They ask for a motor, a set of tires, a new bumper. Then they roll the kart off the trailer in August, it pushes off the corner for no reason anybody can explain, and it turns out the right front has been dragging since June.

Here is the whole story on outlaw kart bearings: where they live, what sizes you actually need, how to tell when one is done, and what to do about it before it takes something expensive with it.

Where the bearings actually are on an outlaw kart

There are fewer than you think, and they fall into three groups.

Front wheel hub bearings

Two per hub, four on the kart. These are the ones that get abused the most because they sit right behind the wheel where every rooster tail of dirt lands. They come in 5/8" and 3/4" depending on your spindle setup. If you're not sure which you've got, pull a hub and measure the bore, or measure the spindle shaft the hub slides over. Don't guess and order — a 5/8" bearing will not save you on a 3/4" spindle, and vice versa.

We stock both: the 5/8" hub bearing and the 3/4" hub bearing. Buy them in fours. You will use them.

Spindle and king-pin bearings

These are the 1/2" bearings that sit in the caster block, top and bottom, and let the spindle rotate when you turn the wheel. Most guys never think about them until the steering starts feeling notchy or the kart won't return to center on its own. When a king-pin bearing goes gritty, it shows up as a steering wheel that feels heavy in one direction and light in the other. Grab the 1/2" spindle bearing and check them any time you've got the front end apart.

Rear axle bearings

Two of them, one in each cassette, carrying the whole rear axle and everything bolted to it. This is where the 206-versus-207 question comes up, and it trips people up constantly.

206 vs. 207: small bearing or big bearing?

Both are 1-1/4" bore. Both fit a standard outlaw kart axle. The difference is the outside diameter and the cassette they drop into.

  • UC-206 — the "small bearing." Lighter, less rotating mass, and what most flat kart and lighter outlaw setups run.
  • UC-207 — the "big bearing." More surface area, more life under load. If you're running a heavy motor package or you're hard on the rear end, this is the one.

The thing that matters most: your cassettes decide which one you run. A 206 cassette takes a 206. A 207 cassette takes a 207. You don't get to pick based on preference unless you're also changing cassettes. If you're not sure what's in your kart, measure the outside diameter of the bearing that's in there now, or take a picture and call us.

If you want to go a step further, the ceramic rear axle bearing spins with noticeably less drag and handles heat better than a standard steel bearing. It costs more. Whether that's worth it depends on how serious your program is — but if you're chasing tenths and you've already sorted your chain and gearing, it's a real gain.

Bearing shields: the $10 part that saves the $30 part

A sealed bearing is only sealed until dirt gets packed against the seal face and works its way past. That's exactly what happens on a dirt track. Bearing shields sit outboard of the bearing and keep the worst of it off — mud, rocks, and the fine grit that acts like sandpaper on a seal lip.

Three signs a bearing is done

You don't need a dial indicator. You need thirty seconds and your hands.

1. It doesn't spin smooth

Get the kart up on a kart lift, spin each wheel by hand, and listen. A good bearing coasts quiet and free. A bad one feels gritty, notchy, or sounds like it's grinding sand — because it is. If you can feel individual bumps as it turns, the races are pitted. Replace it.

2. There's play at the wheel

Grab the wheel at 12 and 6 and rock it. Then 3 and 9. There should be nothing. Any rock, any click, any movement at all means the bearing is worn or the hub isn't clamped right. Check the hub bolts first, then condemn the bearing.

3. The seal is torn or discolored

Pull the wheel and look at the seal face. A tear anywhere means grit is already inside and the clock is running. Blue or brown discoloration on the seal or the race means that bearing got hot — it cooked, the grease broke down, and it's living on borrowed time. Both of those are replace-now conditions, not watch-it conditions.

How often to change them

There's no mileage number on a kart, so go by feel and by calendar. Most guys running a full season should be pulling and checking the front hub bearings every few race weekends, and replacing rear axle bearings at least once a season — twice if you run a lot of mud or a lot of heat.

Right now is the right time. You've got a summer of dirt behind you and however many races left in front of you. Spin all four corners this week. Whatever feels rough, replace it now while there's still season left to enjoy it, instead of in the pits at the next race with a bearing that's already chewed a spindle.

One more thing: when you press a new bearing in, press on the outer race only. Driving on the inner race pushes force through the balls and you'll brinell a brand-new bearing before it ever sees a lap. And clean the bore out first — a little cleaner and a rag goes a long way toward a bearing that seats square.

Get the right ones

Bearings are the least glamorous thing we sell and one of the biggest returns on ten dollars in this sport. A dragging front hub will scrub speed everywhere and never show up as one obvious symptom — it just makes the kart feel bad in a way you can't name.
