Your front end is the one part of the kart you're arguing with every single lap. Get it right and the kart turns clean, tracks straight down the chute, and puts the power down off the corner. Get it wrong and you're fighting the wheel, burning the right front, and wondering why the thing pushes into every turn. This guide walks the whole front end on an outlaw kart — spindles, caster, tie rods, and the toe setting that ties it all together — in plain shop language so you can set it up and actually understand what each piece does.

The front end, part by part
Before you turn a wrench, it helps to know what's hanging off the front of the frame. Working from the wheel back to the frame tube, here's the chain of parts that actually steers the kart.
Spindles
The spindle is the L-shaped shaft your front hub rides on, and it drops through the caster block on a kingpin. Outlaw karts run a left and a right that are not interchangeable — the Left Side Spindle 10° and the Right Side Step Spindle 10° are built with that ten degrees of spindle angle designed in, which is a big part of how the kart wants to return to center. The right is a step spindle for a reason: it changes ride height and how weight loads that corner. Don't mix them up and don't run a bent one — a tweaked spindle will chase you all night.
Caster blocks and kingpins
The caster block is the aluminum block bolted to the frame that the spindle pivots in. Caster is the tilt of that pivot, and it's what gives you steering feel and self-centering. Hold the spindle in place with a proper spindle castle nut and a cotter pin — every time.
Tie rods and rod ends
The tie rods are the adjustable links that connect the pitman arm to each spindle, and they're how you set toe. They thread into rod ends (heims) on both sides, and the length of that assembly is your adjustment. Toigo stocks 7″ and 11.25″ aluminum tie rods along with LH and RH tie rod ends. One tip that saves headaches: run one left-hand and one right-hand end on a rod so you can turn the rod to adjust length without unthreading anything — like a turnbuckle. Lock it down with the matching jam nuts when you're set.
Pitman arm and steering shaft
The steering post and shaft run up to the wheel, and the pitman arm at the bottom is what swings the tie rods left and right. Attach the tie rod ends to the pitman arm with a drilled pitman arm bolt so you can pin it, and use the aluminum pitman spacer instead of a stack of washers. Up top, a lightweight steering wheel and, if you want to pull it for easier entry, a quick release finish it off.
Setting toe the right way
Toe is the difference between how far apart your front tires are at the front versus the back, measured at the same height. A hair of toe-out is the common starting point on a dirt kart because it helps the kart bite and turn in. Too much and you scrub speed and chew the right front; too little or toe-in and the kart gets darty and lazy to turn.
How to measure it
Set the kart on a flat floor with the wheels you race on and the tires aired to race pressure. Point the steering dead straight. Measure between two fixed points at the front of the tires, then the same two points at the rear of the tires, both at spindle-center height. The gap between those two numbers is your toe. To adjust, spin the tie rods to lengthen or shorten them evenly side to side, then re-measure. Change one thing at a time and write it down.
Common front-end mistakes
A few things we see all the time that are easy to avoid: running mismatched or bent spindles and blaming the setup; skipping cotter pins on the spindle nuts; setting toe on cold, low tires and wondering why it's off at the track; and cranking jam nuts so tight the rod ends bind. A front end that's pinned, torqued, and measured cold-to-race-ready will do exactly what you tell it.
